Coming today…. the mini babies!

….false alarm. No package with orchids from DHL today, and this is Friday! If they shipped on Monday like they said they would, how long will it take to get here?? It’s ok with me, but I just hope the package is not sitting in some super cold warehouse someplace this weekend with temperatures dropping below freezing…!

An EPI(c) new plan

So I am a little disappointed over the functionality of the clay pipe actually… In my estimation it did not leech out a whole lot of water for the orchids, and what little did was promptly dried up by the fan. I turned the 80mm computer fan up to 12V since I saw that some mold had started to develop on the backside of the pipe. In any case, it was a fun experiment (thank […]

Waiting for the new plants…

Ok… it’s been a while and still no plants. Still no word even. I am so not good at waiting, this is killing me!! Had my german only been better I would have noticed that O&M has been closed for a week. Well, that explains things, but it does not make it any easier waiting….

Light trouble oh yeah…

This is kind of funny actually… at least now in retrospect.

The whole orchidarium build has been fairly simple really. But now there is this one teeny tiny detail – the mood light – that is giving us so much trouble and that it is threatening to cost as much as the entire build so far! Well, not quite, but what a headache!!

The first spot we got violently blew up when we hooked it up (in […]

Fall 2008: My orchids

Here is my growing window at the moment… a few orchids (5) are missing since I move them into the kitchen when they are blooming so we can enjoy them more.

My growing windowI have three 23W low energy CFL’s at the top (6000K, 96 CRI with an output of 1020 lumen). Then I have a “nebula hobby” light hanging from the middle shelf […]

Dang! The crash of the krona…

So I have been planning to place an order for some orchids from Germany for almost a week now. Doing the research and debating what to get… So I finally go and place the order today and find that the krona has taken a real beating and a euro now cost almost half a krona more than it did yesterday. That really bites!

Day 12: Planning the nano…

Now the fun begins… the planning of the orchidarium. Naturally the size is very limited so I will have to study up on mini orchids. Fun fun.

I was looking at warm growing mini-masdevallias: Masdevallia lata, m. naranjapatae, m. pelecaniceps, m. weberbaueri, m. collina, m. cuprea, . guerrieroi, m. gutierrezii, m. guttulata, m. kuhniorum, m. norae, m. revoluta, m. tubuliflora, m. vieirana…

Or maybe a few of these: Leptotes unicolor, Maxillaria juergensii, Maxillaria variabilis ‘red’, Ornithocephalus manabina, […]

Day 13: Making the selection

I have – after reading about minis until I am blue in the face – finally made my selection! Orchids and More in Germany had a really good selection and the prices were also much better than some other growers I found. I have just placed an order for the following:

Ascolabium pumilum
Ornithocephalus manabina
Leptotes unicolor
Masdevallia tuerckheimii
Masdevallia guttulata
Masdevallia herradurae
Maxillaria juergensii

Then I […]

Day 11: The nano-inspired orchidarium is done!!

Ok. Here are a few notes on the build… I have had requests for a detailed outline for how to build this so I hope this will suffice.

All in all… you can buy a beautiful nano vivarium from Dusk, so unless you are pretty dedicated and is willing to put in a lot of hours it would probably be better to go with a premade one. That said, I think my design is really nice, […]

Day 10: aaahhh the circles are done!

After a few days of collecting my energy, the circles are now cut and done! It wasn’t really that bad, 1 hour of consistent sawing with a fine-toothed metal cutting saw. It turned out pretty good actually.

Yes! It will work.
