Alright… I have spent so much time on the cool vivarium lately that I have kind of neglected the rest of the room a little. So today I took some time to spruce things up a little. The humidity delivery system needed an upgrade, so I got the humidifier all cleaned up (soaking it, well at least the membrane, in distilled vinegar), and then I installed a new chimney for it. Well, dear husband helped with the drilling – because he does it so well… Basically I wanted to bring the fog further up in the tall growing window, then have it gently fall down on the 3 levels of orchids below and at the same time raising the over all RH in the room. But I do not wish to keep the 5L water container for the humidifier 3 meters up in the air… hence the chimney. I used some regular PVC pipes, and a cheap funnel to do it. Three holes drilled in the pipe running across the top and the fog flows down the top like magic..!
A humid lift for the room

Very clean work; I like it. Do you worry about mold growing in the pipe? I wonder if they sell pipe cleaners that large?
Ha ha! You’re funny… nope, never seen a pipe cleaner that large, but perhaps a toilet brush? Seriously… I do not think I will get too much mold up there, since I have it leaning slightly so water should drip back down the pipe into the humidifier and not collect in the pipe. But it also gets to dry out every day during the day since I only run the humidifier at night.
That’s amazing!!! Just got my first orchid I’m in love! I got so much stuff to try to keep it alive! I ended up killing it with a grow light that wasn’t meant for it I found out after Yours are beautiful that’s really amazing!
Thank you! Good luck with your orchid.
Hello there,
I am in gathering supplies to set up a cool orchidarium (for draculas rezekiana, simia and saulii) but I have a question regarding the humidy control. I plan on using a thermohygrometer to check humidity and adjust accordingly using an ultrasonic humidifier. The models you selected look great with interesting features (like auto switch off when empty) but how do you operate them ? Are they on a timer or to you turn them on and off manually? The reason I’m asking is that I am looking for one with the “auto-off when empty” feature but that will produce fog directly when powered (like with a timer or the relay of a controller). Is any of the two humidifier you have can operate like that?
Hi Julien! All models I have seen auto swith off when empty. All you need for them to run on a timer or hygrometer is for the on/off switch to be mechanical, not digital. So physically turning a knob for example. Good luck!
