The shelves in my orchid growing window have gotten notably more crowded lately… hmmm wonder how that happened… The four fans on the right side of the window don’t quite manage to push enough air across anymore. There are simply too many orchids in the way. So, this weekend dear husband helped me install four matching fans on the opposite side. The are 140 mm computer fans that push 38,6 CFM (cubic feet per minute – or 66 m³/h) of air but are relatively quiet at 9 dBA. Noise level is of consideration since we actually love to spend time in the room with the orchids.
This picture also shows the strategic location of the humidifier “chimney”. This ingenious invention directs the cold flow from the ultrasonic humidifier up about 2 meters higher in the window where it lets out right behind a fan. This fan is helping to distribute the humid air evenly across the window instead of just leaving a wet puddle around the unit itself… A pretty cool trick for a couple of PVC pipes and some aquarium glue I think.
With these four additional fans I am now running a total of 16 fans in the room. Good thing they are only 12 volt units…
It’s so great to see that Dear Husband, helps you with your passion for orchids! My Dear Husband waters mine(once in awhile) and always checks for new growth. I think it’s cute when he tells me the latest(even though i already know!), on what he has found outside, lol. I just have to find a great deal like you did to make my own orchidarium! It’s pretty good weather here in Florida for orchids, but sometimes we need to bring them in. Plus, i would love to do a project to see how well i can grow orchids in a controlled environment. hmmm…might have to find a terrarium this weekend, you’re such a bad influence Karma 😉
I know! I do feel very fortunate that I have a significant other who supports my hobby so I don’t have to sneak in orchids and hide them behind the curtains – I had heard of people doing this! I definitely recommend converting a terrarium to a vivarium (terrarium is much better than aquariums as they open from the front). It is a lot of fun, and everything is thriving in there!! Good luck with your project. I am happy to be an inspiration to you – and if it makes you happy, who can say that it’s bad? 😉
