#REBOOTATFORTY — my journey of discovery is currently taking me on a 3000 km thru-hike in New Zealand. I will rarely blog from a hike live since having my head stuck in a screen while out would somewhat defeat the purpose, but I will usually summarize upon returning to civilization and stream updates and select photos on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) live instead—when and if there is access to wifi.

Te Araroa packing list

Walking 3000 km (1865 miles) is quite an undertaking. To be safe I am taking a PLB on this hike, a first for me, but a personal locator beacon is just smart in case I run into trouble - or get lost. Navigation is going to be a challenge at times. After all, this trail is not as well tramped as many other long trails and there are a lot of maps... 141 pages to be exact. [...]

A word on customer service

Service | noun: an act of helpful activity; help; aid: to do someone a service. Not all companies take this word for what it actually means, but some do! I would just like to highlight a few that really made my day recently... OSPREY: I really like Osprey packs, and my Aura AG 65 is no exception. But by the time it had endured one jungle expedition to Costa Rica and a 500 km through-hike in Lapland it creaked [...]

Te Araroa thru-hike

When I set out on my Kungsleden thru-hike this summer I told you that I wasn't sure whether it would be the big crescendo of my reboot-at-forty journey or just the beginning. Well, I guess I have an answer to that query now – this is only the beginning! Rebooting for me is a journey of discovery and my thru-hike this summer flung the doors wide open. Coming home was really hard though... harder than I thought it would be. I did not feel [...]

Kungsleden thru-hike + Sarek travel diary

WHERE: Kungsleden + Sarek National Park, Lapland, Sweden WHEN: August 1 - September 11, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 532 km Turning forty a few years ago kickstarted a journey of discovery culminating in the realization that I needed to reboot my life. This reboot basically involved a whole lot of walking, and I finally decided to walk 500 km this summer to test my limits and to see who I would become on the other side. The dream was to thru-hike the famous Kungsleden (The King’s [...]

Stage 6: Saltoluokta – Abisko

WHERE: Stage 6: Saltoluokta to Abisko - Kungsleden, Sweden WHEN: September 3-11, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 106 km (completed: 532 km in total) This last stage is the most popular section of Kungsleden and it is easy to see why. The trail passes trough some really stunning scenery... the majestic Tjäktjavagge vally, the impressive Kebenekaise mountain range and a climb up to the highest point of the entire trail, Tjäktjapasset. Unfortunately the fact that it is so popular is also why it is taking a beating. It [...]

Stage 5: Sarek National Park

WHERE: Stage 5: Sarek National Park, Sweden WHEN: August 25-September 1, 2016 OBJECTIVE: A challenge! (addendum to the thru-hike), #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 90 km (completed: 426 in total) Sarek National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Europe. It is an awe-inspiring place, often touted as Europe’s last wilderness. It is holding an almost mythical allure to hikers. Probably due in part to the fact that there are no marked trails or accommodations within its borders and weather [...]
