Hiking blog

#REBOOTATFORTY — my journey of discovery is currently taking me on a 3000 km thru-hike in New Zealand. I will rarely blog from a hike live since having my head stuck in a screen while out would somewhat defeat the purpose, but I will usually summarize upon returning to civilization and stream updates and select photos on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) live instead—when and if there is access to wifi.

Posts from longer hikes in chronological order by category:

Stage 4: Kvikkjokk – Saltoluokta

WHERE: Stage 4: Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta - Kungsleden, Sweden WHEN: August 18-24, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 83 km (completed: 336 km in total) Though the trail mostly cuts through a considerable amount of dense coniferous forests dotted with lakes this stage hugs the border of the high mountain region in Sarek to the east and the open moorlands to the west. The trail was in pretty bad shape, really worn by foot traffic and poorly maintained compared to most sections further south. We also met a lot more [...]

Stage 3: Jäckvik – Kvikkjokk

WHERE: Stage 3: Jäckvik to Kvikkjokk - Kungsleden, Sweden WHEN: August 13-16, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 86,5 km (completed: 253 km in total) According to the guidebook this is the least popular stage of Kungsleden, but also perhaps the most underestimated. I actually agree. Again, this is another stretch without any SFT huts and there are parts you have to pay for boat transport, but compared to the previous stage I think this one was alright. Objectively it was [...]

Stage 2: Ammarnäs – Jäckvik

WHERE: Stage 2: Ammarnäs to Jäckvik - Kungsleden, Sweden WHEN: August 7-12, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 87,5 km (completed: 166,5 km in total) This section is one of the least popular on Kungsleden. Perhaps this is due to the lack of infrastructure like huts, but since we are self sufficient this does not affect us that much. On the contrary. It was really nice to have the trail to ourselves. On most days we did not meet more than one [...]

Stage 1: Hemavan – Ammarnäs

WHERE: Stage 1: Hemavan to Ammarnäs - Kungsleden, Sweden WHEN: August 1-6, 2016 OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty DISTANCE: 79 km (completed: 79 km in total) Most people tend to walk this trail southbound thus ending with this stage, but since I chose to walk northbound this is my starting point. The stage is a beautiful introduction to the Swedish fell region cutting a path through the majestic Vindelfjällen, one of the largest protected areas in Europe. It presents a varied landscape [...]

Reboot-at-forty packing list

EVALUATION... details in the evaluation notes at the bottom of this post. Alright, as promised... here is the packing list for my 6 week #rebootatforty thru-hike of Kungsleden (The King's Trail) + Sarek. I find it helpful to see what kind of gear people pack when I research trips, so I am trying to return the favor. Less than one week away now! My base weight is checking in at around 15 kg (not counting what I am [...]

So what is this "rebootatforty" business you ask? I did not think the act of turning forty a couple of years ago was especially traumatic - age is just a number - but it did bring a lot of thoughts and questions I have been wrestling with for the past few years to a head. I really recent the term mid-life crisis, it makes you sound like a helpless victim, but what about mid-life awakening? Researchers have found [...]
