Orchid blog

This blog is dormant at the moment, but it is still getting a lot of visitis so I will keep it up for you guys as a resource. My future adventures will be published on my new blog, hope to see you there!

My focus… if pressed to name favorites it would have to be orchids of the Pleurothallid Alliance. But a Paphiopedilum was the first orchid I ever fell in love with so slipper orchids will always be close to my heart, and while we are on the subject I might as well disclose a love affair with Neofinetia as well.

Bulbophyllum Louis Sander

I don't grow a whole lot of hybrids, and the hybrids I do grow are usually primary hybrids within the same genus. Bulbophyllum Louis Sander is the result of a cross between Bulbophyllum longissimum x Bulbophyllum ornatissimum. When this hybrid was conceived back in 1936 it was actually classified as a primary hybrid in the Cirrhopetalum genus, and it is the earliest recorded hybrid in the Bulbophyllum alliance, but since then genetic research has changed  the family [...]

Neofinetia falcata ‘Shutenno’

I am quite facinated by the Neofinetia falcata species, with all its forms and variations. 'Shutenno' has got to be among the most beautiful of them all. The elegant Neofinetia dragon shape is successfully complimented by a beautiful purple spur and an absolutley amazing scent of jasmine and sweet vanilla! So this would be part three of the fragrance series this summer (part one, two), saving the best for last. It really is the best [...]

Phalaenopsis violacea var. coerulea

For part two of the fragrance series this summer (part one), I am pleased to present this lovely Phalaenopsis violacea var. coerulea. A warm growing species from Malaysia and Sumatra where it grows at an altitude of about 150 meters. The fragrance of my close is not super strong, but it is definitely noticeable, especially when it is warm during the day. As pleasant as the fragrance is, I am actually more in love with the elegant [...]

Paphiopedilum philippinense

This is a fairly large, warm growing species from the exciting multi-floral Paphiopedilum Subgenus Polyantha. It is found at sea level up to 500 meters primarely in the Philippines, hence the name, but also down through north eastern Borneo. The leaves are thick and uniformly green and can grow to be 20-50 cm long, mine measuring about 30 cm. The size of the flowers can wary widely and get as tall as 22 cm, mine is measuring [...]

Masdevallia wurdackii

This is a cool growing epiphyte from northern Peru where it grows at 2000-2400 meters. The plant is medium sized but with very impressive large flowers measuring an impressive 16 cm tall, blooming on a single flowered, erect inflorescence. I must admit I love the whole Caudatae subsection within Masdevallia, but I specially adore the shape of these flowers, so elegant and beautiful and extremely long tails, but the purple spots on the light yellow lime base [...]

Lepanthes wendlandii

This lovely little cool growing Lepanthes hails from the mountains of Panama and Costa Rica where it grows at elevations of 1800 to 3000 meters. Lepanthes wendlandii boasts rather large size flowers for the genus, mine measuring about 10 mm tall but I hear it can grow even larger. Each inflorescence produces many flowers in succession, as is customary with most species in this genus. A feature I really like since it seems that once a plant [...]
