Orchid blog

This blog is dormant at the moment, but it is still getting a lot of visitis so I will keep it up for you guys as a resource. My future adventures will be published on my new blog, hope to see you there!

My focus… if pressed to name favorites it would have to be orchids of the Pleurothallid Alliance. But a Paphiopedilum was the first orchid I ever fell in love with so slipper orchids will always be close to my heart, and while we are on the subject I might as well disclose a love affair with Neofinetia as well.

Phalaenopsis parishii

This tiny little Phalaenopsis is a warm growing epiphyte found on lower elevations in the eastern Himalayas and further south across Indochinese peninsula. This is the first flowering for my orchid, and it produced a very short inflorescence with one small flower, but it is a cute one. The flower is only about 2 cm big and the whole plant is not more than 6 cm across. I grow this mounted on cork in the warm vivarium [...]

Platystele stenostachya

I got this cute little miniature in a trade with a friend back in December. It is native to South America where it grows at altitudes of 1700 meters. The flowers are adorable but super tiny, only about 3 mm. It is times like these I really wished I had a real macro lens... It blooms on a fairly short inflorescence in small clusters of successively opening flowers. Mine has three inflorescences with about 8-10 flowers each, but [...]

Neofinetia falcata ‘Yodonomatsu’

This is one of the lovely little Neofinetia I bought this from a friend about six weeks ago and it pretty much set a flower spike right away. The flowers are small and slightly rounder with a shorter spur than many other Neos. I love the subtle hints of pink spots in the white flowers too. Some clones have a lot more pink coloration than this apparently. True to form it is also very fragrant, I would say [...]

Phalaenopsis Miva Fragrance

A very nice and, as the name suggests, fragrant Phalaenopsis hybrid. I bought it from Marita Åkesson last year, an impuls buy really, but I am glad for it. It is now  blooming for the first time and both the color and fragrance is quite nice indeed. It is a hybrid from Michel Vacherot, registered 1991, and a cross between Phalaenopsis violacea x Phalaenopsis Zuma Gold (a Phalaenopsis amboinensis hybrid). Marita imports them directly from [...]

Exciting new orchid baby arrivals

Today I received a very nice package from a friend in France. It was a box filled with a new batch of orchid babies... All were absolutely beautiful, but I am especially excited about the Vanda coerulea alba. This is a very rare orchid, and a mature plant will set you back anywhere between $150-250. Yes, dollars. This little one will take many years to reach flowering size, but what a great day when it [...]

Coryanthes alborosea in a feildingii disguise

I have been acting like a real mother hen about this one for several weeks now.  The bud seemed to grow painfully slow (although it really didn't) and I was worried that it would actually open up while we were away in Cannes for 5 days and I would miss the big moment. This is my first Coryanthes, and a friend of mine had  informed me that the flowers that usually only lasts a few [...]
