Orchid blog

This blog is dormant at the moment, but it is still getting a lot of visitis so I will keep it up for you guys as a resource. My future adventures will be published on my new blog, hope to see you there!

My focus… if pressed to name favorites it would have to be orchids of the Pleurothallid Alliance. But a Paphiopedilum was the first orchid I ever fell in love with so slipper orchids will always be close to my heart, and while we are on the subject I might as well disclose a love affair with Neofinetia as well.

Talking about flower-machines…

...I have mentioned this, my most faithful flower-machine before. I am not quite sure the Swedish expression "blommaskin" translates too well, but you get the point. This Masdevallia Aquarius Hybrid has been blooming non-stop since May of 2008! This morning I counted over 20 flowers on this thing and I just had to get a picture. I grow this one like the rest, on the windowsill with additional lighting, in sphagnum moss. Isn't she lovely?!

It must be Masdevallia season…

...because almost all of my Masdevallias are blooming now. I have an aquarius hybrid that has been blooming non-stop since May 2008! Another, a small Masdevallia guttulata - truly a perpetual bloomer - is working on on flower number 9 on the same inflorescence at the moment. Only the two winter blooming tovarensis are not in bloom right now. We've had a bit of a cold spell for a few weeks now and the Masdie collection is [...]

Gimme more Aerangis mooreana

This lovely little orchid is blooming right now, and I must admit that that it is a pretty powerful sight. Aerangis mooreana is a small warm grower from Madagascar and the Comoros Islands where it grows at elevations of sea level up to 600 meters. I grow mine in the warm vivarium mounted on a clay pipe filled with water, and it seems quite happy with the arrangement. I bought it from Karge at a show in Sweden back in April and this is [...]

A Grande achievement!

This has got to be one of my proudest moments as an orchid grower... so far. My Phragmipedium Grande has finally decided to bloom!! I have waited two years for this glorious occasion and I plan to take full credit. Damn I am good! (and modest)  Ehm, well... truth be told a few weeks ago I thought I might actually have messed up so bad I would loose this plant, but it seems catastrophe was averted in time. Good times! Two flowers just [...]

The Masdevallia experiment: day 160

Back in April (5 months ago) I decided to start a little experiment with Masdevallia and different growing mediums. Until then I had only cultivated my Masdevallia i sphagnum moss, but I wanted to try goring them in semi-hydro volcanic rock. I had two near identical M. tovarensis orchids so they were a logical choice for my small experiment. Warning: Sweeping generalizations and vague scientific conclusions ahead. Here is the report on the result. The control, Masdevallia [...]

I am back on!!

I have finally gotten my new computer, and I am finally back online! Yes! It is a really nice machine too. Well, I still need to set it up, but at least I have a computer again. Unfortunately I still cannot access my Flickr account for some reason, so I cannot handle photos they way I want... sigh! Why is this stuff never easy... Enough tech talk, there has been so much happening in the [...]
