Te Araroa packing list

EVALUATION… details in the evaluation notes at the bottom of this post.

Walking 3000 km (1865 miles) is quite an undertaking. To be safe I am taking a PLB on this hike, a first for me, but a personal locator beacon is just smart in case I run into trouble – or get lost. Navigation is going to be a challenge at times. After all, this trail is not as well tramped […]

A word on customer service

Service | noun: an act of helpful activity; help; aid: to do someone a service.

Not all companies take this word for what it actually means, but some do! I would just like to highlight a few that really made my day recently…

OSPREY: I really like Osprey packs, and my Aura AG 65 is no exception. But by the time it had endured one jungle expedition to Costa Rica and a 500 km through-hike in Lapland it creaked and […]

Te Araroa thru-hike

When I set out on my Kungsleden thru-hike this summer I told you that I wasn’t sure whether it would be the big crescendo of my reboot-at-forty journey or just the beginning. Well, I guess I have an answer to that query now – this is only the beginning!

Rebooting for me is a journey of discovery and my thru-hike this summer flung the doors wide open. Coming home was really hard though… harder than I thought it would be. I did not feel […]

Kungsleden thru-hike + Sarek travel journal

WHERE: Kungsleden + Sarek National Park, Lapland, Sweden
WHEN: August 1 – September 11, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 532 km

Turning forty a few years ago kickstarted a journey of discovery culminating in the realization that I needed to reboot my life. This reboot basically involved a whole lot of walking, and I finally decided to walk 500 km this summer to test my limits and to see who I would become on the other side. The dream was to thru-hike the famous Kungsleden (The King’s Trail) by […]

Stage 6: Saltoluokta – Abisko

WHERE: Stage 6: Saltoluokta to Abisko – Kungsleden, Sweden
WHEN: September 3-11, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 106 km (completed: 532 km in total)

This last stage is the most popular section of Kungsleden and it is easy to see why. The trail passes trough some really stunning scenery… the majestic Tjäktjavagge vally, the impressive Kebenekaise mountain range and a climb up to the highest point of the entire trail, Tjäktjapasset. Unfortunately the fact that it is so popular is also why it is taking a beating. It is pretty crowded […]

Stage 5: Sarek National Park

WHERE: Stage 5: Sarek National Park, Sweden
WHEN: August 25-September 1, 2016
OBJECTIVE: A challenge! (addendum to the thru-hike), #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 90 km (completed: 426 in total)

Sarek National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Europe. It is an awe-inspiring place, often touted as Europe’s last wilderness. It is holding an almost mythical allure to hikers. Probably due in part to the fact that there are no marked trails or accommodations within its borders and weather conditions and […]

Stage 4: Kvikkjokk – Saltoluokta

WHERE: Stage 4: Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta – Kungsleden, Sweden
WHEN: August 18-24, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 83 km (completed: 336 km in total)

Though the trail mostly cuts through a considerable amount of dense coniferous forests dotted with lakes this stage hugs the border of the high mountain region in Sarek to the east and the open moorlands to the west. The trail was in pretty bad shape, really worn by foot traffic and poorly maintained compared to most sections further south. We also met a lot more people on this […]

Stage 3: Jäckvik – Kvikkjokk

WHERE: Stage 3: Jäckvik to Kvikkjokk – Kungsleden, Sweden
WHEN: August 13-16, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 86,5 km (completed: 253 km in total)

According to the guidebook this is the least popular stage of Kungsleden, but also perhaps the most underestimated. I actually agree. Again, this is another stretch without any SFT huts and there are parts you have to pay for boat transport, but compared to the previous stage I think this one was alright. Objectively it was a rather beautiful […]

Stage 2: Ammarnäs – Jäckvik

WHERE: Stage 2: Ammarnäs to Jäckvik – Kungsleden, Sweden
WHEN: August 7-12, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 87,5 km (completed: 166,5 km in total)

This section is one of the least popular on Kungsleden. Perhaps this is due to the lack of infrastructure like huts, but since we are self sufficient this does not affect us that much. On the contrary. It was really nice to have the trail to ourselves. On most days we did not meet more than one or two hikers. […]

Stage 1: Hemavan – Ammarnäs

WHERE: Stage 1: Hemavan to Ammarnäs – Kungsleden, Sweden
WHEN: August 1-6, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Thru-hike, #rebootatforty
DISTANCE: 79 km (completed: 79 km in total)

Most people tend to walk this trail southbound thus ending with this stage, but since I chose to walk northbound this is my starting point. The stage is a beautiful introduction to the Swedish fell region cutting a path through the majestic Vindelfjällen, one of the largest protected areas […]
