It is Mini Mark season again… mine blooms twice a year with 2 inflorescences each time. I have said it before, but I really love this cute little hybrid. It is small, but I would definitely not call it a mini, even though I have seen it listed as such. The leaf span on mine measure 26 cm across. The short inflorescence (8-10 cm) hold 4-5 waxy flowers that measure about 3,5 cm. Although, when discussing size, I suppose it all depends what you compare it to… The last photo below illustrates the “mini” in Mini Mark.
Phalaenopsis Mini Mark is a cross between Phalaenopsis Micro Nova (maculata x parishii) and philippinense. Mine is the “Holm” mericlone, but there are others. Rumor has it the ‘Levengood’ mericlone might be fragrant, but I do not know if this is true.
Tjena!
I have for a few days 2 phal Mini Mark, that ‘ve bought in a franchised plants saler. The 2 plants were packed together in sphaign. I ‘ve repoted them separately in an epiphit mix. I wonder about thier culture. On a german forum it is said that they are in fact crossed with Lobbii instaed of Parishii. In fact the Parishii were identified in the 1990’. Before that date, they were confused with the Lobbii. And there it is my problem. Lobbii can stand cool to intermediate temperatures, while Parishii requires warm to hot temperature. Most of my orchids are oncidium intergenerics, hybrids of odontoglossum , or cymbidium, dendrobium , zygopetalum, x cattleya aurantiaca… Any planst that require cool to intermediate temperatures. I can’t find anything really reliable on the net. Maybe you have the ressources that could solve this for sure. On the net, sometimes, it is said it’s across of Lobbii, somtimes , it’s supposed to be a Parishii. Thanks anyway for your attention
Sorry Karma, I hurried to much to write you; I should have thought twice before sending you my question . I have double check this german forum. Lobbi and Parishii were confused until 1991. From this date on, the parishii were used in the culture and labelled under thier own name. Before that, only the name of Lobbii was mentionned. So the indication of Lobbii being part of the Mini Mark parents is false. And I will have to cultivate it in a warm zone. Next time, I’ll take a phal Mannii, they need cool to warm temperatures and they are pretty too!!!! And I’ll think twice before bothering you!!! Greetings!
No problem Frederique, I am glad the confusion was cleared up. 🙂 Thank you for writing me, and good luck with your Mini Mark! I grow mine intermediate, medium light and water like other Phalaenopsis.
Thank you very much Karma for answering me. I’ve asked the same question to Bernard Lagrelle, who runs the site “phalaenopsis.org”, specialised in botanic phals (the site is in french, but at the bottom of the home page you can swich to English). He had worked for the INRA (french National Institute of Research on Agronomy)+ Orquideas Acatayma (in Colombia), works now for Michel Vacherot. I’ve noticed that the phal Micro Nova(parent of the Mini Mark) has an orange lip, like the Lobbii. Phals Parishii have a pink lip. And that was a serious clue… And I had to be sure.
… And so his answer has just arrived: the phal Micro Nova is a Phal Maculata x phal Lobbii. So the phal Mini Mark is a Phal Micro Nova (phal Maculata x phal Lobbii) X Phal Philippinensis. The mention of the parishii as a parent of the Micro Nova is an error.
Thank you again so much for the tip. Greetings!
Thank you for sharing your findings with me. Good to know! 🙂
