It is not hard to see how this Masdevallia got its name. The elegantly compressed sepaline tube is very distinct and somewhat reminiscent of a swan’s neck. Although I find the shape curiously intriguing, what is most impressive about this species is the sheer size of the flower in comparison to the plant. The flower is held well above the leaves and the long and graceful sepaline tails span far beyond the foliage of the plant itself. The last photo below illustrates this rather beautifully.
Masdevallia constricta is a small epiphyte from the wet mountain forests of Ecuador and Peru where it grows at altitudes of 1200 to 1800 meters. I got this division in bloom from a good friend last fall and it is now blooming again for the first time. I grow it mounted on EpiWeb in the cool vivarium in medium light and high humidity. Seems to be a quite easy Masdevallia to grow and I really like it a lot.
Hi Carma,
another nice Plant-Portrait. Thank you very much! The link to the right Picture seems to be broken, by the way – or is it a problem of my system? Greetings from Bremen, Ulrich
Thanks a lot!! The photo link is fixed now. 🙂
beauty
Thank you!
Beautiful! Looks so delicate and graceful!
I also wanted to ask, this equatorial plant company, what is the average price for their smallest size flasks, as I have tried to contact them directly, and I haven’t had a response on prices yet. Please help!
Thankyou!
Thanks! I have always gotten goot response to email communication to Equatorial. Perhaps try again? Price depends on the species, but most hobby flasks (of 5 seedlings per flask) runs around £10 or so. But I have gotten some as expensive as £25…
Thankyou! Just started collecting here! Long way to go before I’ll have a collection like yours. It’s amazing! 🙂
Thank you, good luck building your collection – it is part of the fun!
