I am really enjoying the Neofineta season this year… I have had one plant after the other releasing each other since this summer, filling the orchid room with the lovely scent of vanilla and spices. This is the regular white variety, but a fairly recent acquisition (‘Hisui’) with a nice yellow hue is coming up next, the buds are about to open any day now. Something to look forward to. I grow this, like all my Neos, mounted on bark in the warm/intermediate vivarium. (Guess I should have cleaned off the algae before photographing… )
Neofinetia falcata (Thunb.) Hu, Rhodora 27: 107 (1925).
Hi, congratulation, very nice flowers and pictures.
How did you have them blossoming now? I have mine blossoming in late Spring.
Are you controlling the photoperiod?
And what about Winter rest that they should need?
Ciao
Miki
Hello Miki! I am sorry I must have missed you question. My Neos bloom from early spring to late fall. This is the second bloom for the season on this plant. I have lights on 12 hours per day year round. They do get a slightly cooler and drier (but not dry) winter november-january.
Hi.
Wonderful plant and nice photos. I thought, neofineta needs a cool rest period for flowering?
I also have as small vivarium and would like to cultivate neofineta, but till now I did not
try it because it’s a warm viv.
What are your experiences about flower induction on this specie?
Regards
Frank
Thanks Frank! 🙂 Well, I grow my Neos more intermediate than warm, I keep them in a slightly larger case these days so it does not heat up as much by the fluorescent light on top. However, they bloomed fine in the small intermediate/warm vivarium too. The room the vivarium stand in is slightly cooler in the winter (maybe by 5 degrees C), so they do get a slightly cooler rest then. I water less in the winter too. Some cultivars are more forgiving than others as well I think, ‘Shutenno’ just to name one.
Thank you very much 🙂
