Orchid blog
This blog is dormant at the moment, but it is still getting a lot of visitis so I will keep it up for you guys as a resource. My future adventures will be published on my new blog, hope to see you there!
My focus… if pressed to name favorites it would have to be orchids of the Pleurothallid Alliance. But a Paphiopedilum was the first orchid I ever fell in love with so slipper orchids will always be close to my heart, and while we are on the subject I might as well disclose a love affair with Neofinetia as well.
Brassavola nodosa
There is a lot blooming right now, and many of them are very pleasantly fragrant too, adding another dimension to the experience. First out in the fragrance series this summer is this wonderful Brassavola nodosa. It has a faint citrus scent that increases notably in strength at night. To be honest however, even though it is nice I do not grow this species for the fragrance. I just adore the shape and texture of the flowers, [...]
Restrepia brachypus
Restrepia is a genus I am getting to appreciate more and more. They seem quite content to bloom often and abundant and the shape and colors produced in the flowers are quite stunning! What is not to love? This fantastic colorful little gem came from Ecuagenera i May and it is blooming in the cool vivarium right now. The flowers measure about 6 cm tall and have a slight transparent quality to them. They shine bright yellow with [...]
Cattleya intermedia var. orlata
What impeccable timing this lovely Cattleya has this year. She pulled out all the stops and produced a fantastic bloom just in time for vacations here in Sweden. She was in bud when we moved out to the summer place earlier in June, and how she is in full bloom. The flowers measure about 10 cm both tall and wide. I have never had such abundant result on this orchid before, she actually produced four buds [...]
Paphiopedilum sukhakulii
This is a fantastic little intermediate to warm growing species hails from northeastern Thailand where it grows at elevations from 250 up to 1000 meters. It is often found near streams in sandy humus-rich loam mixed with leaf in light to moderate shade. I grow it in my intermediate growing room in a mix of bark and lava rocks, medium bright and evenly moist. The flower measures about 14 cm across which is rather large [...]
Lepanthes cloesii
Lepanthes cloesii is a miniature orchid, but a medium sized species within the Lepanthes genus. It is a cool growing epiphyte from Peru where it grows at elevations around 2800m. The plant measures about 8-10cm and the flowers is quite large for the genus at 2 cm tall. The successively several flowered, slender inflorescence reaches far beyond the broad and elliptical leaves which are distinctly purple on the underside. The species is named after Patrick Cloes of Hasselt, the Belgian collector [...]
Masdevallia cyclotega
This is another one of those proud moments you enjoy as a grower when you bloom something for the first time that you have been wanting to grow for years. I really, really love this particular Masdevallia. Yes, yes I know I am partial to the whole genus and I say this all the time, but this is really a neat one... he he... I got it from Peruflora last year and it is a medium sized, cold growing [...]
