Orchid blog
This blog is dormant at the moment, but it is still getting a lot of visitis so I will keep it up for you guys as a resource. My future adventures will be published on my new blog, hope to see you there!
My focus… if pressed to name favorites it would have to be orchids of the Pleurothallid Alliance. But a Paphiopedilum was the first orchid I ever fell in love with so slipper orchids will always be close to my heart, and while we are on the subject I might as well disclose a love affair with Neofinetia as well.
Masdevallia guttulata – much more graceful than the name implies…
This little gem is blooming now for the first time - for me. I wonder how it got its name, because it sounds as if it should be some hardcore, heavyweight flower, when instead it is quite delicate. The white cone created by the fused sepals is almost sheer and the deep purple spots inside shines through the sides a little bit. I love the shape of the flowers and the purple spots against the almost reflective white coloring [...]
A Paphiopedilum with the mumps!
This lovely creature, Paphiopedilum 'Satin Smoke', came in bud in my order from Schwerter last week. It has just begun to open up and show me that awesome chubby micranthum chin... I just love Paphiopedilum micranthum, but haven't gotten one yet since they have a reputation for being a little hard. I'll start with this one first. This primary hybrid between Paphiopedilum micranthum and P. primulinum truly shows off the best from from the two worlds! The incredible creamy plump [...]
Project flask babies, an update
So a whole bunch of the little flask babies I ordered from Equatorial Plants last summer got to move out of the nursery this week. It was a pretty big job, but really fun to see how much the little guys have grown in about 9 months. It is almost like giving birth, well I am sure my dear sister would dispute that statement... well at least I feel proud as a mother fussing about [...]
Spring orchids at the Botanical Gardens
It is a wonderfully sunny spring day today so we took a walk up to the Botanical Gardens in Gothenburg to check out the spring blooming orchids. We were not disappointed. There were tons of orchids in bloom and a myriad of intoxicating scents coming from all corners of the greenhouses. I took a few pictures and made a slideshow for you to all to see. So welcome in and enjoy the show, too bad we don't [...]
Clamshell chocolate anyone?
Ah, drum roll please! It is time for this years' Prostechea cochleata flowering. The first bud just opened and there is one more not far behind, plus another set on deck. This particular orchid usually has a few flowers open at once, and when one set is done a new set is ready to open, which makes for very long flowering periods. Last year, this one bloomed for 8 months straight. It is a lovely species, very easy to grow I think. I grow mine intermediate on the windowsill in [...]
Paphiopedilum Ho Chi Minh
Gesundheit! No, seriously... Ho Chi Minh is the name of my lovely easter flower this year. Yes, of course it's an orchid! I bought this one from Karge at an orchid show a few weeks ago, and now the bud has finally opened. Just in time for the easter weekend! It is a primary hybrid from the Parvisepalum subgenus (vietnamense x delenatii). Unfortunately the flowers of this particular Paphiopedilum does not last very long, usually only a few [...]
