Cloud forests in Sweden…

Bulbophyllum pulchellumIn reflecting upon my recent vivarium build it occurred to me to what great lengths us hobby growers from all corners around the globe will go through in order to create a little bit of tropical heaven, or Ecuadorian cloud forests in our homes. Through the wonders of technology and sheer ingenuity we manage to bring some of this magic home.

We do it […]

Nebula orchid light reflector upgrade

Nebula reflector projectI finally figured out a good and inexpensive way to upgrade all my three nebula light fixtures with reflectors. I bought Diamond Mylar (Reflect-A-Gro) and glued it into the fixure with spraymount. It turned out really good I think. Hope it gives even better distribution of the light. In theory a reflector should about double the usable light…

More light = happier orchids!! Good times.

How to heat the new vivarium…

I have experimented a little with my new orchid vivarium and I have not really solved how I will heat it sufficiently… I want to keep it in my intermediate/cool growing roomwhere nighttime temp can dip down to 15 degrees in the winter. So the room temperature is definitely not helping. I am aiming for a medium temperature (at night) of 19-24 degrees inside the cabinet (while the room stays at 15-19 degrees) in the colder months.

I don’t think the heatmat I use for my flask babies […]

Whoops… I came home with another orchidarium

new orchid vivariumI was window shopping at terrariums on “blocket,” kind of a Swedish version of Craig’s list… I saw one, the guy lived 10 minutes away and I gave him an offer of half of what he was asking and he took it!! … soooo it just kind of happened….

Ehm… anyhow, the dimensions are 75cm wide 80 cm tall 40 cm deep […]

New blog design

I have just uploaded the new blog design I have been working on for a few weeks now. I am still working out a few kinks with the CSS but all in all it’s all there.  The real pain in the A#@!! was that the simple blog software I was using did s not have an export funtion, so I had to transfer all the posts over to this wordpress blog manually…  sigh! But it […]

New orchid order from Roellke…

Roellke in Germany usually has a sale on young plants for xmas and the more plants you buy the better the price… this year a few people on the forum i frequent decided to go in on an order together. We all ordered a bunch of plants so they only cost 5 euros per plant which is a pretty good deal (almost half price). Two species we all got as a common project. […]

Orchid Fever: A Horticultural Tale of Love, Lust, and Lunacy

I just finished reading the book I got for xmas and can warmly recommend it to orchid lovers as well as their more skeptical friends. The author tells of his experiences when meeting various orchid fanatics around the world, one chapter per person. Some chapters are a little drier than others and he really goes off on the whacked out CITES laws (but who can blame him), but the book is very engaging and sometimes […]

Vanda orchid on ski vacation

27_princess_mikasa_blue_2008-12-28So we are up in Sälen skiing over the new year holiday and I could not find a babysitter for my vanda… So the little princess had to tag along to the montains. It turned out to be kind of cool to have her along on vacation though – as any vacation definitely is enhanced when it involves orchids… naturally. Here is my Ascocenda Princess […]
