I have been dying to try cultivation in semi-hydro for years, and a couple of months ago I finally went for it. I chose a few test subjects and so far the result has been overwhealmingly positive! Here is a status report:
My Ascocenda Princess mikasa (Blue) orchid bought from Roellke in October is now blooming sooo beautifully for the very first time! It had started setting two flower stalks, but one dried up in an early stage, wonder why… Anyway, it gave me 6 beautiful flowers this time and I am so happy!

It is a real treat to follow the opening of the first few buds on the vanda orchid… every morning when we come down for breakfaskt before hitting the ski slopes we get to see a little bit more of the beautiful blue flowers. I bet that if you stared at it long enough you might actually see it […]
The mysterious (no name) paphiopedilum orchid that went under the working name “werewolf” due to its delicious hairy dark bud…. uhm yeah….. has finally opened up. It was well worth the wait though!!

It is almost time… aaaaalllmooost. It is taking its sweet time but I am sure it will be worth the wait in the end. Yes, it really is that dark!!
…and the longest vine (there are 4) has grown to be over 2 meters long (6,5 feet)! That means that it has grown about one meter since May!!

The mystery paph bud is growing and is getting hairier (and scarier) by the minute!! I can’t help to wonder if I have a new hybrid on my hand… a vinicolor x werewolf perhaps… 😉 The bud a couple of weeks ago.
I decided that I cannot wait for a large growing cabinet and rigged up a small growing box for some intermediate growing minis… The little Masdevallia picturata I bought from Lasse a while ago was the first to move in.
