Flask baby orchids status report

Orchid flask babiesThe flask baby project is progressing nicely… here you see the Phalaenopsis amboinensis babies.

The UK kids from Equatorial Plants are growing slowly… oh so slowly. For some you can see clear growth, especially Cattleya schilleriana and D. cyanocentrum. Even Paph. bellatulum and Phal. amboinensis (in the picture) are looking good, some are growing faster than others. Promenaea rollinsonii are […]

Oh oh… trouble in paradise!

masdie_fungusOkay, looked into the nano cabinet last night and it seems like I have a fungus problem on my hands… Two masdevallia orchids, tuerckheimii (left) and guttulata (right) are affected. Dang!!

As much as this sucks, I think I know what the problem is … when I watering water is dripping from the orchids hanging above these guys. With this many plants in the nano the […]

Mmmm phalaenopsis species…

There are just some really AWESOME phal species out there – and I have come to the conclusion that I want them all!!

I have realized that I am going to have to patiently wait until I can get a large orchid growing cabinet (I am dreaming of a “svep” vivarium from Dusk) for warm species until I can get most of them…. But until then, I really need to look into […]

My first semi-hydro orchid project

Maxillaria variabilis (red)I decided to give semi-hydro a try – finally! I have been dying to try this for years and really do not know why it took this long to just go for it…. Anyway, here is my new Maxillaria variabilis (red) from O&M in s/h leca. I will return with a status report.

Ta-da!! The new orchids are in!

Nano inspired orchid vivarium  Finally the mini orchids from O&M are in! Well some are perhaps not very mini… they may have to move out as soon as I get a larger growing cabinet. It was a big job but I am very happy wit the reslult! I am also thrilled to find that moss has started to grow on EW […]

Learned something new, again!

Dendrobium cyanocentrum orchids and Cattleya schilleriana orchid babiesToday, I had to replant all my orchid flask babies. I learned that the aluminum baking trays I was usng for pots, when put in water on leca do not last… do not know what causes it, but the bottom is entirely “eroded”. Then of course, the moss is wicking up […]

Minor adjustments

nano-orchidarium - second incarnationI have been debating weather I need to add some ventilation to the nano orchidarium… Most of the time RH is right at 100% and I am afraid I might get a problem with mold in the future. Right now the 80mm fan is set for 12V and is doing a great job, but once I get more orchids […]

How it all started…

I got a question today… How it all started, the orchid obsession that is (his words not mine).

Well, it’s almost a little embarrassing to admit, but it was a teen infatuation that opened my eyes to orchids actually… Who? Morten Harket, naturally you remember the singer from the 80s group A-ha… Apparently, he grew orchids and the rest, as they say, is history.
